Guridi scores on debut and joins Sevilla's elite

The Basque midfielder netted a penalty in just 50 minutes on his LaLiga bow, becoming the 21st Sevilla debutant goalscorer of the 21st century.

Jon Guridi needed just 50 minutes to make his mark at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán. On his LaLiga debut for Sevilla, the Basque midfielder converted a penalty—the second of his career—to help level the score against Rayo Vallecano and spark a remarkable comeback. With that goal, Guridi joined an exclusive club: the 21 Sevilla players who have scored on their first league match since 2001, according to MARCA.

Two decades of debut goalscorers

The story began in 2001 when Moisés García scored against Zaragoza at La Romareda. Since then, illustrious names have found the back of the net on their presentation: Julio Baptista and Renato did so in 1-0 victories against Atlético Madrid and Albacete. It took ten years for the fourth case, Aleix Vidal, who debuted with a goal at Mestalla in 2014.

Sevilla's golden era

Since 2015, sixteen more players have scored on their first match in white and red, coinciding with one of the club's finest periods. Standout performances include André Silva with a hat-trick in Vallecas, Erik Lamela with a brace against Rayo Vallecano, and memorable debuts from Sergio Reguilón, Papu Gómez and Neal Maupay. On the opening day of 2016-17 against Espanyol (6-4), five players scored: Ben Yedder, Sarabia, Franco Vázquez, Vietto with two goals and Kiyotake.
