Joao Ferreira discharged from hospital after scary fall

Saint-Étienne's Portuguese defender was stretchered off against Clermont but medical tests rule out serious injury.

Saint-Étienne's victory over Clermont (3-1) in Ligue 2's second matchday was overshadowed by a frightening moment involving Joao Ferreira. The 25-year-old Portuguese defender was stretchered off after a violent collision with Clermont forward El Hadj Koné early in the match. According to L'Équipe, the player appeared to lose consciousness on the pitch and left Geoffroy-Guichard stadium wearing a neck brace.

Good news came the following day: the club confirmed that after a night of observation in hospital and the completion of medical tests, Joao Ferreira had been discharged. "After a night of observation and conclusive tests, Joao Ferreira was able to leave the hospital this morning to rejoin his family," the Loire club stated, adding that they would monitor his recovery according to medical recommendations.

Despite the scare, AS Saint-Étienne now sits top of Ligue 2 following their win against the Auvergne side.
