Lewis-Skelly eyes midfield role at Arsenal as he impresses in pre-season

Myles Lewis-Skelly broke into Arsenal's first team as a left-back, but his preferred position has always been midfield. The 19-year-old's rapid development earned him an England debut in March 2025, where he became the country's youngest goalscorer in a senior debut during a 2-0 win against Albania. He was subsequently rewarded with a new five-year deal at the club.

According to BBC Sport, minutes were limited last season with Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapié taking precedence. However, Lewis-Skelly finally got his opportunity in midfield in the closing weeks, impressing so consistently that he started nearly every remaining game as Arsenal won the Premier League.

This summer, the academy graduate has excelled in pre-season friendlies against Girona and Real Betis, showing maturity as a deep-lying midfielder. Calafiori praised their partnership, saying "we don't need to speak." With senior midfielders like Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Eberechi Eze still catching up on fitness after international tournaments, Lewis-Skelly has an unexpected window to stake a genuine claim for a starting role ahead of the Community Shield.
