Modric explains Milan renewal: "I needed to listen to my body"

The Croatian renews with Milan at 40 after waiting to feel physically ready. He denies the World Cup elimination influenced him.

Luka Modric has confirmed his continuity at Milan following two weeks of uncertainty. The Croatian midfielder, aged 40, joined the Italian side's preseason and played today in the friendly against Inter in Perth (1-1). In statements to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Modric revealed the reasons behind a decision that took its time.

"I always had in mind staying one more year, but I could have signed in December and didn't because I wanted to listen to my body," explained the Croatian. "I needed to understand how I felt, if I still had the same hunger and passion. The answers were what I expected: I'm still in good shape and have everything needed to continue. When I saw the board still wanted me here, I didn't have many doubts."

Modric denied that Croatia's KO against Portugal at the World Cup (2-1 in the Round of 16) pushed him to stay on. "I'm here because I had a great time and the club showed me so much affection," he assured according to Mundo Deportivo. The Croatian also referred to Gonçalo Ramos' signing (70 million from PSG) and expressed his desire for Rafael Leao to remain at Milan, without ruling out his possible departure.
