Mumin nearing Girona deal as defensive priority

Girona are close to signing Abdul Mumin, a 28-year-old Ghanaian centre-back available as a free agent from Rayo Vallecano.

Defence remains Girona's main priority in the transfer market, and according to The Sun, the Catalan club are nearing the signing of Abdul Mumin, a 28-year-old Ghanaian centre-back currently available as a free agent after his contract with Rayo Vallecano expired.

Mumin would arrive with a free transfer following failed renewal talks. Rayo offered him a new deal, but the financial terms did not convince the defender. His recent history has been complicated by a serious injury: on March 1, 2025, he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture during a match against Sevilla, sidelining him for several months. Although he returned late in the season, he saw limited action due to the demands placed on Rayo's squad competing in both LaLiga and the Conference League.

The move would address an obvious gap in Girona's defence. With LaLiga Hypermotion starting in less than two weeks, the club has only David López and Alejandro Francés as established centre-backs, forcing the coach to rely on Antal and youth prospect Holmes Junior throughout pre-season. If completed, the signing would be a step forward, though the sporting directors continue to evaluate the possibility of bringing in a second defender depending on how the market develops.
