Nkunku and Fofana sidelined by Milan to force moves

AC Milan has placed the two French internationals in the club's «loft» to facilitate their departures before the transfer window closes.

AC Milan has decided to sideline Christopher Nkunku and Youssouf Fofana from the project, as confirmed by L'Équipe. Both French internationals have been placed in the Rossoneri's «loft» alongside other players the club is keen to move on before the summer window shuts.

Nkunku's situation

Nkunku, 28, had already requested to leave Milan before being shelved. The forward made 32 appearances last season (7 goals) but is keen on a loan move to rebuild his career. His placement in the loft will help him find a destination. Barcelona has maintained contact with his representatives for some time, RB Leipzig—where he thrived between 2019 and 2023 with 70 goals and 56 assists—is studying a return, and Borussia Dortmund is also monitoring the situation. The player's hefty wages, among the two highest in Milan's squad, will be a key factor.

Fofana's case

Fofana's sidelining comes as more of a surprise: the former Monaco man, 27, was a cornerstone of last season's campaign (33 Serie A matches, 28 as a starter) and even featured in two of Milan's three pre-season friendlies. From England, clubs like Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest have already inquired about the midfielder, though his substantial salary complicates any potential deal.

The Rossoneri face severe financial difficulties after failing to qualify for the Champions League, explaining their need to offload quality assets in these final weeks of the market.
