Racing return to top flight after 14 years against Villarreal

Racing end their historic wait and debut in LaLiga against Villarreal with Iñigo Pérez as Villarreal's new coach.

Elite football returns to Santander this Sunday. Racing will host Villarreal on the opening weekend of LaLiga, marking the Cantabrian side's return to the top flight 14 years after departing, according to MARCA. An anticipated comeback that brings hope of maintaining their status in the top division for seasons to come after dominating Second Division.

The debut in the top flight

José Alberto can count on his key players: both Gustavo Puerta and Jorge Salinas remain at the club and will be available for the debut. Sergio Canales is Racing's main signing and will be the standout attraction of their return, alongside centre-backs Pedro Felipe and Pablo Ramón, plus striker Zabiti. Racing arrive with an attacking approach that allowed them to dominate the Segunda.

Villarreal, meanwhile, begins their campaign under Iñigo Pérez, seeking to repeat last season's third-place finish that secured Champions League qualification. The yellows back young Maciá (17 years old) as their midfield novelty, with Ayoze in fine goalscoring form as their main attacking outlet.

The battle of the protagonists

The match will have a special appeal: Canales, the prodigal son returning home, will face Mikautadze, whose goals will be key for Villarreal to claim victory at the Sardinero.
