Raphinha named Barcelona's first captain

Raphinha becomes the first Brazilian to be appointed captain of FC Barcelona for the 2026-27 season.

Raphinha has been named first captain of FC Barcelona for the 2026-27 season, becoming the first Brazilian to wear the armband in the club's history, according to the official Ballon d'Or website.

The shift in the dressing room hierarchy comes unavoidable following the departures of two current captains: goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, loaned to Ajax, and defender Ronald Araújo, moving to Liverpool. Although Barcelona must still make an official confirmation, the Brazilian stands out as the leading candidate for the role.

New command structure

The succession reflects Raphinha's leadership and influence more than strict seniority criteria. Frenkie de Jong would become second captain, followed by Pedri González in third position. Gavi would serve as fourth captain, while Éric García joins Barcelona's 'command bridge' as the fifth captain.

His Ballon d'Or nomination in 2025 and recognition as La Liga's best player support this decision. With 75 goals in 177 games as a Blaugrana, Raphinha trails only Brazilian legends like Rivaldo (130), Evaristo de Macedo (105) and Ronaldinho (94).
