Rio Mavuba exits Bordeaux coaching role

Rio Mavuba departs Bordeaux by mutual agreement just weeks after extending his contract, as the club navigates administrative uncertainty over its league status.

The Girondins de Bordeaux announced on Thursday the departure of Rio Mavuba, who had only recently extended his contract with the Ligue 1 side. According to L'Équipe, the former French international midfielder (13 caps) informed the club of his intention to leave following a friendly match against Aviron Bayonnais (a 1-2 defeat) last Friday.

Mavuba had taken over the team in March 2026 following Bruno Irles's exit, posting a solid record of 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat, though the squad missed promotion to Ligue 3. In a statement posted on X, the coach said: "The context is very particular; I hope the authorities validate our retention in National, and that the club can quickly return to the highest level."

The departure comes amid major uncertainty at Bordeaux, officially sold to Sparta Capital but awaiting a ruling from CNOSF to avoid administrative relegation to Regional 1. Arnaud Cormier, his assistant, will take temporary charge until a new coach is appointed.
