Atletico Madrid complete the signing of Cristian Romero from Tottenham for £34.2m, retaining a 15% sell-on clause.
Done deal: Cristian Romero is now an Atletico Madrid player. According to BBC Sport, the agreement between the Spanish club and Tottenham has been finalized at £34.2m (€40m), with a 15% sell-on clause for the Londoners.
The 28-year-old Argentine defender becomes Atletico's fourth summer signing after five seasons in the Premier League, where he made 156 appearances and scored 13 goals. The English captain departs after representing Argentina at the World Cup final in North America, missing just one match throughout the tournament.
For Tottenham, it's a significant loss — they're also losing Djed Spence, who is in advanced talks with Inter Milan for around £25.6m. Atletico, meanwhile, continues its busy summer under Diego Simeone, pushing their spending beyond £100m in transfers as they aim to challenge for La Liga after finishing fourth last season.
