Sergio's stunning debut goal lights up Racing's La Liga return

Teenager Sergio Martínez scored a spectacular strike as Racing Santander made their emotional return to La Liga, though Villarreal came back to draw 2-2.

Racing Santander marked their emotional return to La Liga after 14 years away with a memorable Sunday afternoon at El Sardinero. The Cantabrian side led 2-0 against Villarreal thanks to an Andrés Martín penalty and, most notably, a stunning goal from Sergio Martínez in the 34th minute, a strike that flew past the goalkeeper at 126 km/h.

The weight of the moment

It was far more than just any goal. The 19-year-old midfielder, appearing in only his third official match and his first in top-flight football, was visibly overwhelmed by emotion. «The poor kid couldn't believe what had happened,» said Álvaro Mantilla, Racing's captain, as reported by The Guardian. Martínez reached the corner flag with trembling legs and tears in his eyes, the reality of what he had just accomplished washing over him in front of 22,413 fans who lost themselves in celebration.

Reality sets in

For 44 minutes, Racing played something approaching perfection. «The energy was unstoppable,» even Villarreal's coach Iñigo Pérez admitted. But La Liga is unforgiving: within 67 seconds, goals from Pape Gueye and Nicholas Pépé restored parity. The 2-2 draw will prove valuable for a side fighting to stay up after their return to the top flight. Racing's coach José Alberto López summed it up simply: this is what the first division is, and how merciless it can be.
