Valencia cuts costs with Almeida despite extending his contract

André Almeida extended his deal with Valencia until 2029 less than a year ago, surprising many given he was not an essential piece. According to MARCA, the Portuguese player complained about being among the lowest-paid in the squad, which led the club to improve his terms.

The move, however, was a financial balancing act. Valencia had signed Almeida for 8 million euros in August 2022 on a contract until 2028, which meant a yearly amortization of 1.33 million. By extending the deal, the remaining amortization dropped to 1 million per year. The salary increase was nearly offset by this reduction in amortization costs, so the club's overall expense remained virtually unchanged as long as the player didn't stay beyond 2028.

The gesture didn't have the desired effect. Over the past year, Almeida has been less active and has contributed little to the team, leading the club to believe his time at Mestalla is over. A move to Swansea in England's Championship is currently being negotiated, though the player still has some doubts about the transfer.
