Van Bommel to discuss Courtois' future with Madrid keeper without prejudging

Mark van Bommel was unveiled as Belgium's new head coach on Friday, taking over from Rudi García through Euro 2028. The Dutch manager already has a sensitive issue to tackle: bridging the gap with Thibaut Courtois.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper had signalled his intention to step away from international football, but Van Bommel has signalled he is open to dialogue. "We will talk with Thibaut. We will sit down calmly. They cannot expect me to answer now without having spoken to him. We will talk without making any judgement", the coach explained in a press conference, as reported by Sport.

Van Bommel also clarified his football philosophy, rooted in the Dutch school: "I like to have the ball, dominate as much as possible and anticipate the opponent". The manager emphasises working with Belgium's young talent, highlighting that there are "many players under 25 with a lot of talent" following the retirement of the golden generation of Lukaku, De Bruyne and Witsel.
