📷 L'ÉquipeVillarreal draws at Racing Santander despite second-half comeback
Villarreal fought back from 2-0 down with goals from Gueye and Pépé but couldn't complete the turnaround in matchday 1.
Villarreal got their La Liga campaign off to a frustrating start with a 2-2 draw at promoted Racing Santander in the opening fixture, according to L'Équipe. Iñigo Pérez's side found themselves chasing the game early after conceding twice in quick succession at El Sardinero.
The Yellow Comeback
Racing built their two-goal lead through Andrés Martín's penalty in the 21st minute and Sergio Martínez's powerful strike from 25 yards out in the 34th. Villarreal's response was swift and spectacular. Pape Gueye reduced the deficit with a crisp left-footed finish from distance in the 45th minute, and moments later Nicolas Pépé levelled with a curling effort that kissed the post.
Despite the impressive comeback, the Submarine failed to clinch victory. Racing Santander, back in the top flight after 14 years away, proved they belong at this level, with their passionate home crowd driving them forward throughout a competitive opening day.
