Nantes loses to Red Star in difficult Ligue 2 return

FC Nantes made a disappointing return to Ligue 2, losing 1-0 to Red Star at the Beaujoire in a behind-closed-doors fixture imposed as punishment for serious incidents in their final match of last season against Toulouse.

Thirteen years after their last spell in the French second division—which they exited with a 1-0 win over Sedan—the Yellows faced an experienced, well-organised rival. Red Star, who finished fourth last season and are also promotion contenders, proved superior and more clinical, according to L'Équipe.

Kévin Cabral scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute, finishing from a Elyaz Zidane cross. Goalkeeper Maxime Dupé protested what he believed was a refereeing error, though the goal stood. Nantes' Ligue 2 debut has been tough; they will need to significantly improve their game beyond combative football and long balls if they are to challenge for promotion.
