Arsenal under Arteta: set-piece goals still missing after seven games
Arsenal are still goalless from set-pieces (no penalties) after seven Premier League matches, after 25 such goals last season.
Arsenal’s early Premier League run has a clear talking point: after seven matches, they are yet to score a single set-piece goal (non-penalty). The Gunners are one of only four teams—along with Liverpool, Manchester United and Nottingham Forest—that haven’t found the net from that source yet.
The gap with last season is huge. Arsenal hit 25 non-penalty set-piece goals on their way to the title, a Premier League high, including 19 from corners. That output also extended a streak of five straight campaigns in which they scored at least 15 non-penalty set-piece goals.
The improvement was linked to the arrival of Nicolas Jover in 2021. This term’s dip is, in Mikel Arteta’s view, tied to margins: “Sometimes we score a goal, or they score an own goal… but we didn’t do things we…”. Sky Sports’ “Between the Lines” looks into why those set-piece goals may start coming again soon.
