Arteta keeps winning with subs: Madueke fires Arsenal past Forest
Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest with a goal from the bench. Earlier, substitutes decided vs Sunderland (2-0) and Leeds (2-1).
Arsenal kept the trend going with another game-changing substitution: Noni Madueke came on at half-time against Nottingham Forest and scored the winner, finishing a move with a heavily deflected right-footed strike.
This season, the pattern has held in their last three Premier League wins. Bruno Guimarães delivered decisive moments vs Sunderland (2-0) and Leeds (2-1), while Madueke repeated the trick against Forest. It’s also the only league goals Arsenal’s substitutes have scored so far, and every one of those has been a winning goal.
The Guardian’s Opta-based analysis points to a bigger benchmark in the Premier League record book: the most winning substitute goals in a single season is six. The article argues Arsenal have been on a pace that would challenge that number, though it notes it’s unlikely to continue at that exact rate. Since Arteta took charge in December 2019, Arsenal have produced the most winning goals from substitutes of any team, with their bench also leading in combined goals and assists over the last two seasons.
