Atlético Madrid bounce back with three straight wins after a shaky start
Diego Pablo Simeone’s side reached the break on a run of three wins, including a 0-3 at Anoeta, and sits five points behind Barcelona.
Atlético Madrid, coached by Diego Pablo Simeone, turned a shaky start into momentum by delivering three straight wins after early stumbles against Villarreal and Athletic. From San Mamés they accelerated, then sealed the run with a 0-3 at Anoeta and the derby at the Metropolitano, with Jan Oblak standing out.
The shift has also come via new signings: in the derby, four of the five latest signings started and made an immediate impact, with goals from Grimaldo and Jonathan David. Simeone had repeatedly framed the beginning of the season as “reconstruction.”
A key setback
The biggest downside is still Pablo Barrios’ injury. A fresh muscle problem has kept him out and left a hole in a group where Alexander Sorloth has not even managed to make an appearance this season.
Defensively, the numbers have improved. After conceding eight goals in four matches, Atlético have allowed only one in their last three wins. In LaLiga, the phase they’ve built earns them an 8, as they look to keep up with Barcelona.
