Barça rejects Revolut over Luis Figo as brand image
Barça is negotiating a new deal with CaixaBank and turned down Revolut due to its link with Luis Figo, Mundo Deportivo reports.
The FC Barcelona keeps working to renew its contract as a financial partner for the club, aiming to close an agreement with CaixaBank after the previous deal expired a year ago, according to Mundo Deportivo.
At the same time, the club has received offers for the role, but one proposal didn’t move forward: Barça rejected Revolut’s bid after concluding that the digital bank is tied to Luis Figo. Mundo Deportivo points to the weight of the former Portugal international’s figure for Barça supporters as the driving factor behind the decision.
Talks with CaixaBank
As Mundo Deportivo explains, Barça has been exploring different options, but the main goal remains renewing with CaixaBank. The negotiation is still ongoing at this stage.
Why Revolut was turned down
The reason for the refusal is Figo’s connection to Revolut: the outlet says the bank uses Figo in its campaigns and that some ads even reference his Real Madrid move back in 2000. For Barça, the concern was that such an association could backfire (“boomerang”). That’s why, with Joan Laporta leading the board, the club appears to have set a clear boundary—avoiding a partnership that includes the former player among its public faces.
By way of wider context, Mundo Deportivo also notes that Figo sits on the UEFA board, while Revolut continues to build its presence in sport—details Barça considered when assessing the proposal.
