Bompastor’s Chelsea start UCL league phase with 1-0 win

Chelsea started the new Champions League league-phase format with a win. As Mundo Deportivo reports, the side led by Sonia Bompastor beat Austria Wien 1-0 thanks to a strike from Wieke Kaptein, earning their first three points in Europe’s top competition.

Early goal sets the tone

The London club went ahead in the 11th minute. Kaptein fired from outside the box and the shot ended up in the net after clipping the crossbar. With the lead, Chelsea managed the game until the end, though Mundo Deportivo notes that the visitors still created chances to level.

Bompastor has been in charge since last season and continues to steer Chelsea back toward the sharp end of the tournament. The report also highlights that, in the previous campaign, the team reached the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Arsenal, after going unbeaten in the prior league stage.

With confidence but plenty ahead, Chelsea’s next European match comes on 30 September, when they travel to face OL Lyonnes, coached by Jonatan Giráldez.
