Borussia Dortmund rolls out a “fan mode” to curb phone use
First test this Saturday in the Bundesliga vs Eintracht Frankfurt: fewer unlocks means points and prizes.
Borussia Dortmund announced this Friday it will introduce a new “fan mode” to encourage supporters to use their phones less during home matches. The first trial happens this Saturday at Signal Iduna Park against Eintracht Frankfurt, in Bundesliga round seven, with 81,000 fans expected.
Per the club, supporters who unlock their phones the least will earn points they can swap for a gift card at the official store or for BVB signed shirts. The feature works like “airplane mode”: with a single click, fans can disable their screens and focus on the match.
The initiative follows a Vodafone survey from 2023 of 1,000 regular attendees, which found that 63% use smartphones during games. “Every football spectator should live the moment and the emotions, not an email screen,” said Marcel de Groot, CEO of Vodafone Germany.
