Branthwaite says a brain-linked rehab study helped him conquer injuries
Everton’s defender credits a complex rehab programme in Munich for his return and explains his England call-up for the Nations League.
Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite has opened up on the turning point behind his latest return to full fitness, linking it to a detailed rehabilitation project in Germany.
As The Guardian reports, the 24-year-old credits a “complex” programme he underwent in Munich with MYOS (sports and health), where clinicians studied connections between his injuries and factors including brain activity and movement. Branthwaite framed the work as a breakthrough and connected it directly to his recall to the England squad, saying of the call-up: “It is a proud moment.”
The rehab work in Munich
The article explains that Everton sent him to the Munich clinic at the start of the summer after repeated setbacks, particularly hamstring and groin problems. Branthwaite described meeting with the club after picking up injuries multiple times and said the point was to look at the broader, “holistic” picture of the body. He spent “three or four weeks” working alongside a team at the clinic, with assessments that included movement patterns and “the brain.”
Back in England’s Nations League squad
His progress has been rewarded with a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia. If selected, it would be his second appearance for the senior England side, after his debut as a substitute against Bosnia and Herzegovina in June 2024.
Branthwaite also recalled the mental and sporting cost of the recurring injuries. In April, he was carried off in tears after another hamstring issue in the Merseyside derby defeat by Liverpool, ending his season and impacting hopes of a late World Cup squad bid. “It is probably the worst thing as a footballer not to be on the pitch… I think now I am in a position where I got managed throughout the pre-season, managed my load well,” he said.
With his England call secured and a strong individual start to the campaign, the focus now is simple: stay available and keep showing the form that earns him the shirt.
