Bruno Fernandes’ place in doubt as Man Utd boss Carrick weighs Bournemouth
Michael Carrick faces questions before Sunday’s Bournemouth clash about whether skipper Bruno Fernandes should be dropped after the Como 4-1.
Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United) is in the spotlight as Michael Carrick considers whether to leave his skipper out for Sunday’s Premier League showdown at Old Trafford against Bournemouth. The debate has flared after United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como and Fernandes’ public criticism aimed at Carrick’s setup.
Duncan Ferguson was blunt on BBC Sport, saying Carrick should “put people in the team you trust” and that he “wouldn’t pick” Fernandes even if he’s their best player. Joe Smith (Stretford Paddock) agreed Fernandes shouldn’t play and referenced doubts around Lisandro Martínez’s involvement after the Leeds match. Wayne Rooney, on United Stand, added that the dressing room fractures started with Martinez and could spread further, warning Carrick he needs to “come out fighting”.
A decision under pressure
Carrick is due to speak in a 13:30 BST news conference previewing the Bournemouth game, where he will be asked directly whether Fernandes will be dropped. The timing is sensitive: United are stuck in a run of seven without a win, and losing to Bournemouth would match the grim sequence Louis van Gaal suffered in 2015-16.
Injuries to Benjamin Šeško, Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford narrow Carrick’s options. There’s also sympathy for Fernandes at Old Trafford, including the fact he gave 10 interviews after Como, and that some regard his comments as less explosive than Martínez’s.
