Bruno Fernandes to stay Man Utd captain after Carrick criticism
The Portugal midfielder keeps the armband after his post-match outburst following Man United’s 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.
Bruno Fernandes will remain as Manchester United captain and the club will not discipline him for his criticism of Michael Carrick after the 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. BBC Sport reports that the Portuguese midfielder questioned the tactics for the match, then argued that changes should come from the head coach and his backroom staff rather than the players.
While some responses to Fernandes’ comments were negative, there is sympathy inside Old Trafford for the situation he was put in. He carried out 10 post-match interviews in Como, even though Joshua Zirkzee replaced him midway through the second half. The anger was also linked to the manner of the loss, described as one of the worst in United’s European history.
The next decision is whether Fernandes will be selected for Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. Carrick will address the situation during his pre-game news conference on Friday at 13:30 (BST).
