Champions League sets scoring record: 187 goals and 4.16 per game

The competition has 187 goals total and averages 4.16 per match, with 78 scored across two days last week.

The Champions League keeps piling up record numbers: it has 187 goals and an average of 4.16 per game, the highest in the tournament’s history since the format started in 2024-25. In the latest round, the Tuesday slate produced 40 goals across nine matches.

Last week was even wilder. On Wednesday alone there were 46 goals, the third-highest scoring day in the competition’s history, and Tuesday plus Wednesday combined for 78 strikes, making matchday two the highest-scoring in history. “Look how many goals have been scored, it’s phenomenal,” said former Manchester United and England winger Ashley Young on BBC Radio 5 Live. Stephen Warnock described the volume as “incredible”.

More goals, less jeopardy

The piece also revisits the format change UEFA introduced in 2021. The group stage was replaced by a 36-team league phase: eight one-off fixtures per side. Places 1-8 go straight to the knockout round, while 9-24 enter a two-legged play-off, with the bottom eight eliminated. Tom Arnott said on BBC Radio 5 Live: “I think the entertainment has gone up, although I’m not sure the quality has gone up.”
