Chelsea: 15 goals but 13 conceded; Alonso seeks balance

Chelsea scored 15 and conceded 13 in six games, with 22 Premier League matches without a clean sheet.

Chelsea under Xabi Alonso is riding a rollercoaster: 15 goals and 13 conceded across six matches, averaging 4.7 goals per game. As The Guardian notes, the thrill factor is real, but the defensive side is becoming the obvious question when it comes to securing European football.

The numbers suggest the attack is currently running hot. Chelsea scored 15 with an expected-goals total of 8.4, an over-performance of 6.6, and a conversion rate of 18.3%—second only to Manchester City’s 19.1%. Eight of their 15 goals came from shots with xG below 0.13, including the 5-1 win over Bournemouth, where the five goals arrived from an xG of just 0.75.

The issue is at the back

Defence is where the pressure is mounting: 13 goals conceded (joint-most in the Premier League) and no clean sheet in the competition since January, a streak of 22 games. The Guardian links it to a high-risk approach that pushes players forward, leaving space for opponents when possession is lost.

That risk was exposed in the 3-0 defeat by Brentford before the international break. All three goals came from targeting space behind Chelsea’s advanced wing-backs—forcing midfield decisions between following runners wide or holding shape, with the centre left vulnerable.

Signs after the Bournemouth game

The encouraging counterpoint arrived in the 5-1 win over Bournemouth. The Guardian reports that Chelsea used a more compact 4-4-2 structure out of possession, defending with a back four instead of a back three. Josh Acheampong played more like a right-back, Colwill and Maxence Lacroix stayed closer together, and Caicedo’s return added energy and protection in front of the back line, while Jordan Henderson brought organisation to the press. Even so, Bournemouth still created 67 entries into Chelsea’s final third compared to Chelsea’s 39, so balance still isn’t fully solved.
