CTA backs VAR call to rule Lo Celso goal out for Betis

The referee committee confirms the VAR check: Lo Celso’s goal is correctly disallowed for a prior handball by Cucho Hernández.

The Technical Committee of Referees has endorsed the VAR intervention that led to the disallowing of Lo Celso’s goal for Real Betis. The CTA’s ruling is that there was a prior handball by Cucho Hernández, and therefore the goal should be cancelled. As explained by the committee, VAR properly instructed De Burgos Bengoetxea to review the incident and the movement fits a “deliberate swing of the arm toward the ball”. It also adds that the attacking phase continued until Lo Celso’s goal, so the disallowance is correct.

In Tuesday’s “Tiempo de Revisión” broadcast, the contentious action involving Badría Güler—a supposed elbow/codazo incident versus Sevilla—was not covered, as the committee considers there wasn’t a clear enough camera angle. Meanwhile, Sevilla responded on social media with a post including an image of referee Cordero Vega talking to Isaac Romero after a second yellow card in a match from a week earlier versus Levante.

The committee also discussed another episode: VAR corrected a decision around Moleiro and Revivo. Víctor García Verdura changed his call, and the CTA says a penalty for Elche should have been awarded due to an “ostensible and persistent” grab.
