David Silva comes out of retirement at 40 to join Sha Tin
The former Manchester City midfielder signs with Sha Tin in Hong Kong after retiring in 2023 following an ACL tear.
David Silva, the former Manchester City midfielder, has ended his retirement at 40 to join Sha Tin in the Hong Kong Premier League. As BBC Sport reports, the move comes after he retired in 2023 following an anterior cruciate ligament tear sustained during pre-season training with Real Sociedad.
Silva arrives with a standout record: he won the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships with Spain, and lifted four Premier League titles with City. In an Instagram video, he said: “I’m so excited to go to Hong Kong and enjoy the local culture, the food in Sha Tin and, of course, football in Hong Kong.”
Sha Tin are eighth after four matches. The club said Silva will arrive soon to settle in, link up with squad training and work his way up to peak match fitness before making his pitch debut. Next up for Sha Tin is a match against Hong Kong Football Club on 18 October.
