Declan Rice and Arteta’s ‘lighthouse’ idea: he’s different now
After a private chat, Mikel Arteta explained Declan Rice’s new role after Arsenal’s 2-1 win vs Leeds.
Mikel Arteta has made it clear that Declan Rice is no longer the “lighthouse” of his Arsenal after the 2-1 win over Leeds. The manager spoke privately with the midfielder at the start of the season and told him his job on the pitch has to evolve.
“ I went to him and I said: ‘you are not the lighthouse anymore. You are something else,’ ” Arteta said after the match in which Rice set up the winner for Bruno Guimaraes.
The “lighthouse” label followed Rice since he joined Arsenal in 2023: Arteta described it as a player who provides a focal point, clarity and direction for everyone around him. The term had also been used by Pep Guardiola for Rodri at Manchester City.
