Emiliano Martínez taken to hospital after concussion scare at Chelsea

The Argentina goalkeeper went for “precautionary tests” after a collision with Branthwaite; Alonso doubts him for the next three Chelsea matches.

Emiliano Martínez (Chelsea) was taken to hospital for “precautionary tests” after manager Xabi Alonso said he suffered a concussion during the Blues’ 2-0 win at Everton on Saturday.

The incident happened in the 68th minute as Martínez collided with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while trying to claim a cross from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s free-kick. After an eight-minute stoppage, Martínez was replaced by Mike Penders, who made his Premier League debut for Chelsea and saw out the rest of the match.

Speaking after the game, Alonso said Martínez left the stadium conscious and is now in hospital undergoing checks: “It was a concussion, but beyond that I do not know… he’s now in hospital.” With doubts over his fitness, Chelsea face Tottenham and Manchester United next in the Premier League, with a Carabao Cup tie at Liverpool in between.
