Europa League: OM stumble, Lyon win and Rennes draw
After the first matchday, Marseille lost heavily, Lyon took three points and Rennes earned a goalless draw—this is the table in the Europa League.
The first Europa League matchday brought very different outcomes for the three French sides involved. As RMC Sport reports, after Lyon’s win and Rennes’ scoreless draw, Marseille’s trip to Turkey went badly: Beşiktaş beat OM 4-1.
Three different stories
RMC Sport explains that Olympique de Marseille couldn’t set things right under Bruno Genesio, and it leaves them low in the table: they sit 32nd after the opening day. The timing isn’t ideal either, with big matches coming right after.
On the positive side, Lyon got off to a strong start by winning 1-2 at Anderlecht. Stade Rennais, meanwhile, grabbed a point with a 0-0 draw away at Sturm Graz.
What’s next
With this result, Marseille now has immediate chances to bounce back. RMC Sport notes that the team faces PSG this Sunday at the Vélodrome, and then hosts Olympiacos on 15 October.
For their next Europa League games, RMC Sport adds that Lyon will play Crystal Palace, while Rennes’ next test is at home against OFI Crète.
