Gianluigi Donnarumma faces his PSG return with Manchester City
The 27-year-old goalkeeper visits the Etihad this Wednesday after leaving PSG, insisting he’s not there for “revenge”.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, the Manchester City goalkeeper, is set to reunite with Paris Saint-Germain this Wednesday at the Etihad, determined to avoid any “revenge mindset” despite the difficult split. He joined City officially on 1 September 2025 after months of twists around his future.
In the summer that ended his PSG chapter, Donnarumma was left out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham. Luis Enrique addressed it the same day in his pre-match press conference, saying: “I can only speak well of Gigio Donnarumma… but we were looking for a different profile.” He added that these are “always difficult decisions”.
The renewal that broke it
As RMC Sport had reported, the key disagreement came in the contract talks. PSG proposed a new salary structure with a smaller fixed part plus meaningful variable bonuses. Donnarumma was the last player still on the old-style deal with only a fixed component, and he didn’t want to go back to that base.
After the decision, Donnarumma posted a long message on his social media. He said he gave everything since day one to earn his place and defend PSG, but added that “someone decided” he could no longer be part of the group. Marquinhos, meanwhile, spoke in 2025 about how the club and supporters remain, insisting the history would be remembered—comments that reflect the respect he carried.
Now, ahead of the Champions League tie, the Italian also knows City must win following their 2-0 victory over Porto. His circle says he has no intention of talking about revenge before facing his former club again.
