Girona visit Heliodoro again: 2022’s ascent night in Tenerife

Girona, coached by Quique Álvarez, travel to Heliodoro Rodríguez López this Monday to close a new Segunda División matchday. The venue is tied to the club’s history: their last trip there was on 19 June 2022, when they beat Tenerife 1-3 to earn promotion back to LaLiga after a 0-0 draw in the first leg.

That night, Cristhian Stuani scored from the penalty spot to put Girona ahead, Carlos Ruiz restored parity, and José León’s own goal swung the tie again. Arnau Martínez then sealed the 1-3. It ended a run of playoff heartbreak in 2015, 2016, 2020 and 2021.

Four years on, Girona have a very different squad and Míchel is no longer in charge, but the aim is the same: to get back among the top teams as soon as possible. Tenerife, as Mundo Deportivo notes, will want memories to stay on the stands.
