Guéhi and Diop stay on their feet instead of kneeling
Kneeling has not been mandatory since 2022-23 and now only happens on two October matchdays under the No Room For Racism campaign.
Marc Guéhi, defender of Manchester City, stayed on his feet again before the Aston Villa game and chose to applaud, just as he had before the Champions League match against AEK Athens. Issa Diop of Ipswich kept the same stance on Friday night against Nottingham Forest and was the only one of the 22 players on the pitch not to kneel. According to RMC Sport, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Leeds), Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Everton), Tyler Adams and Rayan (Bournemouth) have also stayed standing.
Before the Champions League game, Guéhi said the gesture had lost its meaning. Leeds boss Daniel Farke explained that Calvert-Lewin sees staying upright as a way of showing respect, and that each player backs the campaign in his own way.
The requirement was dropped in the 2022-23 season. The gesture began in 2020, after George Floyd's death, and now the Premier League only keeps it on two October matchdays under the No Room For Racism initiative.
