Güímar-Hortaleza: tie to be played behind closed doors on Sunday 11 in Tenerife
RFEF has ruled after the incident following the 1-0 first leg: the Copa del Rey return is set for Puerto de la Cruz with no fans.
Güímar vs Hortaleza will be played on Sunday 11 October at 12:00 in the afternoon behind closed doors at Estadio El Peñón in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, after the RFEF lifted the suspension of the second-leg Copa del Rey qualifier. The match had been put on hold because Hortaleza’s side refused to play, citing concerns for their safety, following incidents before kickoff and with the 1-0 result from the first leg already decided in Madrid.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, on Tuesday 6 October the RFEF Disciplinary Judge Rafael Alonso dismissed appeals from both clubs. Atlético Unión Güímar wanted the refusal to be treated as a no-show, while Sporting asked for the tie to be awarded to the Tenerife side due to the serious incidents.
The decision means the fixture will be contested rather than declared forfeited. While the judge rules out handing the tie to Güímar as a loss, any responsibilities stemming from the clashes will be examined separately in an additional disciplinary procedure. The winner will face Sevilla in the first round of the Copa del Rey, scheduled for 27, 28 and 29 October.
