Gustavo Varela powers Monza with a 4-0 win over Cagliari
Against Cagliari he scored twice and assisted once: he’s up to nine goals this season and Portugal have him on their radar.
Gustavo Varela kept turning heads for Monza: on Monday, versus Cagliari, he produced two goals and an assist in the 4-0 rout and was named Player of the Match for the second time this season.
Before that, he’d already gone on a scoring run with similar impact: a double against Avellino in the Coppa Italia and another against Sassuolo in Serie A. Overall, he has nine goals this campaign, including six in the league, plus others with Portugal’s U-21.
Mundo Deportivo highlights how his game isn’t limited to staying in the box: he can receive with his back to goal, attack the space behind the defense and threaten from mid-range. His role has also shifted in Monza under Ivan Juric, closer to a more recognizable No. 9, pinning centre-backs and helping the team structure attacks around him. The same source adds that big clubs are tracking him and so is Portugal’s senior team coach Jorge Jesus.
