Ibrahima Konaté explains why he didn’t wear the Ceuta shirt

The Real Madrid defender spoke in a press conference before the Champions League trip to Leipzig after the Sept. 15 t-shirt row.

Real Madrid defender Ibrahima Konaté addressed the controversy over the Ceuta-support t-shirt from September 15: he said he did not wear it that day. He spoke this Tuesday in a press conference, after the summer crisis that hit the Spanish enclave bordering Morocco.

Konaté’s explanation was straightforward. He said he “didn’t really understand” what was written on the shirt, so he felt unable to take a side. He also added: “I’m from France, but my parents are originally from Africa. They left Africa to come to France,” arguing that many people share a similar situation.

According to RMC Sport, after seeing the full context he understood “both points of view.” He also noted that the other players did wear the message. With the focus now on football, Real face Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday at 21:00, then the Clásico against Barcelona on Sunday at 21:00 at Camp Nou.
