Inter snatch 2-2 draw at Roma: Martínez haunts Gasperini

The Stadio Olimpico delivered a see-saw story as Inter clawed back from behind, with Lautaro Martínez scoring both goals in the 2-2 draw. After Roma led by two, the visitors’ response came through the same man who, as Gian Piero Gasperini joked, “always scores against me”.

Roma push early, pay later

As The Guardian reports, Roma started in Gasperini’s style: pressing higher up the pitch, engaging in one-on-one duels and trying to create chances through individual battles. The match looked like it was heading Roma’s way when Manu Koné opened the scoring and then found the net again before the break.

The second Koné goal needed a VAR check: The Guardian says the review confirmed there was no offside, and that Roma’s overall play included both cutting moments and a dose of luck. Even so, Inter still had threats of their own—Martínez missed a clear chance and Alessandro Bastoni struck the post earlier, warning that the comeback could come.

Martínez drives the comeback

The turning point arrived after the break. The Guardian describes how Martínez released Marcus Thuram down the left, and the move set up an excellent finish into the bottom corner to make it 2-1. From there, Inter stayed relentless and ultimately levelled.

Gasperini couldn’t hide the grin after the match despite Roma’s squandered advantage, and The Guardian includes his post-game explanation when asked what he told Martínez: “He always scores against me”. He added that Martínez is highly regarded everywhere, even if he makes everyone “suffer”.
