Isak: choosing Liverpool was an “easy decision”

Alexander Isak says signing for Liverpool was, for him, a straightforward call. The Sweden international moved from Newcastle on transfer deadline day in September 2025 for a British record fee of £125m, and he credits the club’s intent as a major reason he chose the Reds.

“[Liverpool] is a massive club, and everything about the club made it pretty clear,” Isak told BBC Sport’s The Football Interview. He added that the club’s ambition and their push to bring him in were decisive.

From move to setback

Isak also looked back on the tougher stretch after his arrival. He admits his first season at Anfield was difficult in front of goal, and then a broken leg ruled him out from December to April. Despite that disruption, he insists he never regretted the move: when asked about whether he’d had doubts last season, he said, “No, never. I would never think like that.”

This term, the numbers are starting to swing his way. Isak has already matched last season’s Premier League return of three goals after only four games, and he says he’s optimistic about what the campaign can bring.

Iraola wants him up front

With new head coach Andoni Iraola arriving over the summer, Isak says the plan involves high intensity and a more aggressive approach. Iraola has told him he should help defend from the front, described by Isak as an “attacking weapon” for Liverpool—press, win the ball, then counter quickly to drive it forward.

Isak also discussed his role with Sweden at the World Cup, where he made his debut after logging 1,032 minutes for Liverpool across 22 appearances last season. He said the tournament was “perfect” given the injuries, because it gave him a window to regain rhythm and form.

Finally, Isak wants Liverpool to win silverware this year, but he says he doesn’t set personal targets—his focus is simply on scoring.
