István Kovács named referee for Real Madrid vs Leipzig
UEFA has appointed Kovács for the Wednesday Champions League clash at the Bernabéu, with Tomasz Kwiatkowski on VAR.
Romanian referee István Kovács will take charge of Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig next Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabéu. UEFA’s latest appointments make it his first game in this Champions League season, and he sits in the competition’s Elite group, having been an international official since 2010.
For Real Madrid, it will be Kovács’ sixth European match: three wins and two defeats. His last appearance ended in a 1-0 loss to Liverpool at Anfield in last season’s group stage. Earlier precedents in the Champions League had gone Real’s way, including the 3-1 win over Manchester City at the Bernabéu in the 2024-2025 qualifying round and the 5-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund at home in the group stage.
VAR duties will be handled by Polish official Tomasz Kwiatkowski.
