Jaissle snaps after Leeds 4-1 as Newcastle face Hull test
Matthias Jaissle was very angry in the away dressing room after Newcastle’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds and outlined how to respond vs Hull.
Newcastle’s season hit a new snag at Elland Road, and Matthias Jaissle made sure his players knew it. According to BBC Sport, the head coach was especially forthright in the away dressing room after the visitors suffered a 4-1 defeat against Leeds United on Monday.
Fast lessons from Elland Road
Jaissle later stressed that the club’s learning curve has to be quicker than usual. “There was all clarity in the room that the learning curve needs to be really fast,” he said. BBC Sport also notes that, even during a previous five-game unbeaten run, Newcastle understood the process would remain “always going to be a work in progress” after a summer of big changes.
The game itself offered few positives. Newcastle struggled to get a foothold against a proactive, physical Leeds side, and midfielder Nico Gonzalez was forced off with a concussion in the 19th minute.
What Newcastle must improve
For the next challenge against Hull City on Saturday, Jaissle pinpointed the basics he wants to see: better duels, more aggression, and a sharper approach to winning second balls. “If you’re tougher in the duels… more aggressive… more sharp and hungry to collect the second balls… then it will be automatically a huge step already,” he said. That, he added, should lead to greater dominance, more possession, and more threat.
BBC Sport highlights the scale of the problem in the first half: Newcastle lost 56% of their duels, and defenders Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman were outmatched by Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored twice. The match echoed an earlier warning, when Newcastle had failed to match Bournemouth’s intensity and were already 2-0 down after 35 minutes.
No excuses, but adjustments
Jaissle took over just three weeks before the season started after Eddie Howe stepped down, and injuries—Dan Burn, Joelinton, Anthony Elanga and William Osula among them—have made adaptation tougher. Still, the message was blunt: “We don’t search for excuses… We need to learn fast.”
Former Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Zlatko Junuzovic told BBC Sport that Jaissle’s response to setbacks is usually analytical rather than emotional: they review what happened, make a tweak or two if needed, and avoid drastic changes.
