Jamie Leweling breaks through Marc Pubill and punishes Atlético in Stuttgart
Leweling scored for Stuttgart on 20 October at the MHPArena after a avoidable front-area loss by Marc Pubill.
Marc Pubill, of Atlético Madrid, couldn’t stop the goal that knocked the wind out of Jan Oblak’s strong start: at the MHPArena on Tuesday, 20 October, Stuttgart took the lead following an avoidable turnover in the final third.
Leweling capitalised with a steal from Pubill in the area’s “balcony” and, after the Spaniard tried to play his way out, he faked his way into space, set the ball with his left and drove it into the net. Morten Hjulmand’s knee touch during the play also left the shot a bit “muddied” as it slipped under the goalkeeper.
A blow to Oblak
Oblak had been doing the job before that, making three big saves in the first half hour to prevent Atlético from falling behind. Leweling’s strike put an end to that spell—right after the Reds & Whites suffered another avoidable loss from the back.
Key moments that mattered
Stuttgart’s lead also grew from early problems: in the first minute Bilal El Khannous finished left-footed after a turnover, and Josha Vagnoman followed with a low right-footed effort that Oblak parried into two phases when the ball was already heading inside. A bad clearance then left Angelo Stiller with a chance from the top of the area, and Oblak saved again, even after getting there a little hurriedly.
