Javi Rodríguez extends with Celta to 2030 after “full understanding”
The Celta defender signed until June 30, 2030, following a breakout spell that led to his debut with Spain’s senior team.
Javi Rodríguez, Celta’s center-back, extended his contract until June 30, 2030. Speaking in a press conference, he said the talks were “all very easy, very quick” and that there was “full understanding between the club, me and my agents”, showing he was “very happy to stay here”.
The Spanish international noted the deal was reached during the international break week to avoid crowding it with matches. He also shared a moment from his Spain debut build-up: “I have an anecdote with Borja Iglesias,” adding that he was so shocked after messages that he didn’t even congratulate him on his World Cup call-up.
Last season, Rodríguez played 33 LaLiga games, starting 28, and also featured in a dozen Europa League matches. The club’s sporting director, Marco Garcés, called him a benchmark for his 2003 generation: “the player with the most minutes,” despite not always looking like the clear reference early on. The Celta hierarchy said his path should inspire youth players who go through spells with few opportunities.
