Jean-Philippe Mateta rescues Crystal Palace as they draw 2-2 vs Besiktas
The forward scored in Istanbul and Palace held a 2-2 after Umit Akdag’s red in the Europa League.
Jean-Philippe Mateta found the net as Crystal Palace salvaged a 2-2 away draw at Beşiktaş in Istanbul, in a Europa League clash shaped by a late twist after the home side’s red.
Mateta’s goal came after VAR ruled out his opening strike in the fifth minute for a marginal offside. Earlier, Besiktas had taken the lead just before half-time: Wilfred Ndidi fired in with the hosts’ first shot on target.
Comeback and red card
After the restart, Palace levelled through Yermey Pino, who finished Anan Khalaili’s cut-back. VAR again stepped in, this time confirming Palace’s goal. Four minutes later, Mateta edged them in front by intercepting a loose pass and smashing home.
Junior Olaitan restored parity for Besiktas, but the match swung when Umit Akdag was sent off for a bad tackle on Jorgen Strand-Larsen. The final score was 2-2, ending Palace’s run of two straight defeats, according to Sky Sports.
