JJ Gabriel: Man United offer scholarship but risk losing him for £350,000
Manchester United have lodged a scholarship offer for JJ Gabriel, yet a move to Europe could still trigger compensation from £350,000.
Manchester United have lodged an official scholarship contract offer for JJ Gabriel after he turned 16 this week, but they still face the risk of losing the teenager for as little as £350,000 if he moves abroad, per The Guardian.
The situation began last month when Gabriel asked for his registration to be cancelled, triggering a scramble among Europe’s clubs. Under Premier League youth rules, the scholarship offered for next season is what blocks him from leaving to an English rival for nothing in January.
Scholarship means a fee
Now, if any Premier League club wants to sign him, it must negotiate a fee directly with United. If no agreement is reached, compensation would be set by a tribunal under the Professional Football Compensation Committee.
At a tribunal, United would expect more than £3m, plus a clause giving them 20% of his next transfer fee. The piece also points to a previous academy tribunal involving Rio Ngumoha, where Liverpool had to pay Chelsea £2.8m upfront with £1.2m in add-ons, including a 20% sell-on.
Madrid, Barcelona and others watching
A United team photo released this week briefly raised hopes of reconciliation, but a breakdown between Gabriel’s representatives and the club leaves him “almost certain” to leave. His camp were allowed to sign a pre-agreement after his 16th birthday, but talks stalled after disagreement over first-team minutes.
His next move is not final; he is believed to favour a European option, where FIFA figures for a Category I academy suggest United would receive around £350,000. Real Madrid are tipped as favourites, with Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain monitoring. The club will consider legal action if it believes recruitment rules were breached, and sources say Gabriel has missed training for more than three weeks.
