Jonathan Clauss (Nice) steps down as captain after four matches

Nice’s designated leader began Ligue 1 2026-27 as No. 1 captain, but after four games he relinquished the armband role.

Jonathan Clauss, Nice’s right-back and international, started Ligue 1 2026-27 as the team’s main captain after being chosen by Olivier Pantaloni, but he only lasted four matches before stepping away from the armband.

Last season, Clauss had a more sporadic captaincy, wearing the armband on five separate occasions. This time, he was set as the clear first option to lead the side, yet he ultimately backed out of the responsibility.

With 14 caps and two goals for his national team, Clauss also faced the psychological weight that comes with being the one to wear the captain’s armband. L'Équipe notes that the coach has to get the selection right so the burden doesn’t become too heavy.
