José María Giménez faces a Metropolitano return in a new shirt: the Uruguayan is now with Deportivo after 13 years linked to Atlético Madrid. Despite having two years left on his Atlético contract, he has made it clear he considers the relationship over.

As Mundo Deportivo reports, his exit was handled unusually during summer negotiations: a straight loan to the Coruña side, after Atlético extended his deal to 2029, with the club taking on most of his 6.25 million euros gross annual wage. At 31, Giménez arrives with nine consecutive starts as Deportivo sits ninth in LaLiga, a notable position for a newly promoted team.

In his press comments, he said: “Decidí salir para ayudar al club que tanto me dio… Mi etapa en el club terminó”. He also insisted that he doesn’t expect to go back: “La gente ya sabe que no me va a tocar volver allí…”.
