Josh Acheampong pressures Chelsea as his deal runs to 2029

With Xabi Alonso using Josh Acheampong more, Chelsea now faces a tough call on his long-term future before next summer.

Josh Acheampong, Chelsea, is turning into a regular under Xabi Alonso: he started six of Chelsea’s last nine matches and has 581 minutes, with only Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Levi Colwill and Maxence Lacroix playing more. Alonso’s defensive setup also helped Chelsea keep their first clean sheet of the season away at Everton.

The big issue for Chelsea is contractual. Acheampong, 20, is tied down until 2029, meaning the club will have to make a decision between now and next summer. His future has been questioned before, with reports of potential exits, even though sources at Chelsea insisted he was “untouchable”.

Chelsea even looked at similar-profile defenders recently — Dean Huijsen in summer 2025 and Jeremy Jacquet in January 2026 — while in December 2024 Acheampong finally signed a deal lasting to 2029 after negotiations following the risk of losing him in 2023.
