Lewis Koumas breaks Gerrard’s record with a goal and assist
At 21, he became Liverpool’s youngest ever to score and assist in the Champions League vs LASK (6-3).
Lewis Koumas (Liverpool) made history by becoming the youngest player to score and provide an assist in a Champions League match for the Reds, firing in the decisive moments in their 6-3 win over LASK. Two of his strikes were ruled out for offside before the third went in.
BBC Sport notes that it came just three days after he made his first Premier League start against Manchester City, with Alexander Isak, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike all injured. Koumas kept it simple about what he needs to deliver: “I need to get goals and assists… This is my job.” He also said getting the contributions mattered because they hadn’t come for him “before Linz”.
The week has been even busier: on Sunday vs City, with the game at 0-0, he nearly scored from a chance set up by Barcola, but Gianluigi Donnarumma saved it. Koumas admitted he couldn’t sleep after the chance: “I just kept thinking about the chance all night” and “I couldn’t have hit it any better”.
