Lisandro Martinez hits out at Man Utd board after 2-0 loss
Man Utd are winless in five games after a 2-0 defeat to Atletico, with Martinez demanding more investment after Champions qualification.
Lisandro Martínez has launched a sharp attack on the Manchester United hierarchy after the Tuesday 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid left the club with five games without a win. Their last victory came on 10 September against Sabah FK, and the only other win of the season arrived at Old Trafford versus newly promoted Ipswich, after going behind.
2-0 and five winless
Martínez said United should have done more in the market despite finishing third in the Premier League last term to secure a Champions League return for the first time in three years. “We did a fantastic season last season and now we expect more from the top, more players to compete,” he said, adding: “I expect more [investment]. 100%. I expect more from our technical director [Jason Wilcox].”
He also stressed it is “easy to blame” the coach after games like this, but insisted the issue goes beyond the sideline. The summer focus on spending £155m on three midfielders—without addressing other areas—has drawn fresh attention to the lack of attacking support for Benjamin Sesko and competition at left-back for Luke Shaw.
Martínez has one year left on his United contract and has not agreed an extension. His comments were backed by former United players Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young on Prime Video, while Carrick said he had only heard about the interview and would need to find out more before saying what could be done, with Michael Carrick pointing to the need to move forward quickly.
